As a hypnotherapist based on Hope Street in Glasgow city centre, just a short walk from Glasgow Central Station, I work with many people who feel stuck in a cycle of vaping, smoking, or both. I stopped smoking myself after 20 years using self‑hypnosis — I once thought I couldn’t enjoy a night out without a cigarette, and now I see it differently.

Today, vaping is everywhere in Glasgow — and across the UK — and more people than ever are questioning what it’s doing to their lungs, their anxiety levels, their productivity, and their sense of identity.


The Rise of Vaping in the UK

Across the UK, vaping has risen sharply in recent years, including among people who never smoked before. Research carried out in England reflects this wider trend, and youth vaping has increased enough that the UK Government has launched a £62 million, 10‑year study to understand long‑term health effects.

This shift means more people are now looking for ways to quit vaping, not just smoking.


What Vaping Does to the Lungs

While vaping is often marketed as “safer,” new research shows it is not harmless.


1. Vaping can reduce lung performance

A 2024 study presented at the European Respiratory Society found that vapers and smokers had almost identical reductions in lung capacity and oxygen intake, and both groups became out of breath more quickly than non‑vapers.


2. Vaping is linked with respiratory symptoms

A review of 56 studies found associations between vaping and:

  • Cough and bronchitis

  • Asthma symptoms

  • Pneumonia and lung irritation


3. Long‑term effects remain unknown

Cancer Research UK states that while vaping is less harmful than smoking, e‑cigarettes still contain chemicals that may pose risks, and long‑term effects are not yet fully understood.

  • “What if I run out of liquid?”

  • “What if I can’t cope without it?”

This is psychological dependency — and it’s incredibly common.

Another pattern I see often is procrastination.

People tell me:

  • “I go to vape instead of doing the thing I actually want to do.”

  • “I lose time scrolling and vaping.”

  • “I know I’d be more productive if I wasn’t constantly reaching for my vape.”

Vaping becomes a micro‑escape — a way to avoid tasks, decisions, or emotions. Over time, this chips away at motivation, focus, and self‑belief.
